Avatar was a groundbreaking movie for many reasons – highest grossing movie of all time, stunning CGI that went way beyond anything ever seen before in a movie and many new technologies and techniques that pushed the envelope of how movies will be made into the future. Director James Cameron also directed Terminator 2 – which was the first ever movie to utilise CGI, Titanic, a movie that was so expensive to make that two studios funded it and the previous record holder for the highest grossing movie, and now Avatar. It took for years to make and a rumoured $250million budget.

Here’s a fascinating movie on how Cameron used a head-mounted camera rig to capture the actors facial expressions to capture a previously unheard of level of granularity:
